Day 4
Left on a slightly brighter morning and stopped 20 min just down the road before moving – not the one way bridge but about 200m earlier was a big tree that had obviously been just dropped and cut up in to pieces by workmen – must have gone across the whole road.
Haast – information centre had an enterprising young woman doing coffee on a proper coffee expresso machine and genuine whitebait fritters – lovely! Bit overcast as we set off through the Haast pass – but it did get better.
Lake Wanaka – road alongside – hills very bare and can see the mountains in the distance – Oh this is beautiful – found lots of places where would have loved to park the night – a motorhomers paradise.
Lake Hawea – came down the hill and the lake looked lovely – lots of places to stop alongside the lake
Found our way to the house in Wanaka – lovely modern, beautifully furnished – our bedroom has ensuite – large bedroom but rest will be a bit cramped for 8 people. HAd quick meal and then found Errol 's phone number and we went round for coffee. Jean and her husband Kees were staying and they were all going to the Airshow. Errols house is lovely – lots of stone walls, paintings and photos, timber inside and fits in well with the landscape. Semi rural – must be lovely in the daytime.
Day 5
Lovely morning – not quite blue sky but warm and not too windy. We set out over the Cardrona range – alongside the Cardrona river first and then over the hill – lovely view from the top – barren bald rocky hills but looking down to the Queenstown valley and could see vineyards, poplars changing colour and the Remarkables in the distance looking remarkable –
Arrowtown – replica of the old village – well, some original buildings but many were just replicas – lots of shops with beautiful goods – but tourist mecca – trees were starting to turn gold and it would look a real picture in a couple of weeks.
Real estate in Arrowtown – very pricy $650,000 for not even a very fancy house
Drove through Queenstown – lots and lots of townhouse type blocks – almost clone like – clearly a lot of developme
nt since I was last there.
We both went up in the gondola – my first time – beautiful view – the Remarkables didn’t have snow on them but they were as beautiful as I remembered. The luge down the mountainside was very popular with the young ones.
